With regard to the amount of wine produced, Italy is the leading country in the world. It continuously rivals with France for the title of the largest wine producer. Over one million vineyards generate around 15% of global yield. In 2007, Italian wine makers have supplied the market with the impressive 4.7 billion hectolitres of wine.
This is a country of immense possibilities and great surprises. It produces wine in an outstandingly large number of varieties and of different quality. Every region of Italy take pride in its own variety; to name some of the most famous: Brunello di Montalcino, Chianti, Montalcino, Nobile di Montepulciano from Tuscany; Franciacorta from Lombardia; Rosso Piceno from the Marche region; Barolo, Barbera d'Alba from Piedmont; Etna from Sicily; Bardolino, Amarone, Valpolicella from Veneto.
The basic grape varieties grown in Italy are:
