Spain wine regions mapIn terms of vineyards’ area Spain is ranked first in the world - the total wine growing area amounts to 1.200.000 ha (14.7% globally). The production volume - 39.400.000 liters per year, gives Spain the third place in the world. Spain is the third largest wine exporter in the world. The main export markets are Germany, Great Britain and the United States.

So far, Spain was most famous from its fortified wines sherry and malaga. However today, even more appreciated are excellent dry wines from La Rioja, Ribera del Duero, Torro, Navarra, Rueda and Penedes, as well as an excellent sparkling wine Cava. In Spain, there are 62 DO areas, which cover half of the total wine growing area.

The most famous wine regions of Spain are La Rioja, Ribera del Duero, Rueda, Toro, La Mancha, Montilla Moriles, Rias Baixas, Priorat, Navarra and Penedes.

The main grape varieties are:

  • Reds – tempranillo, garnacha tinta, graciano, mazuelo, cabernet sauvignon and merlot
  • Whites – verdejo, viura, garnacha blanca, malvasia, chardonnay
